Getting to Port Canaveral
Getting to Port Canaveral is straightforward, and you have several great options depending on your travel style and budget. The majority of cruisers fly into Orlando International Airport (MCO), which sits about 60 miles from the port — roughly a one-hour drive under normal traffic conditions.
Renting a Car
Renting a car is one of the most flexible options, especially if you're planning to spend a day or two exploring the area before your trip. Paid parking is available at the port, with options ranging from covered to open-air surface lots. Prices vary and parking can be at a premium during peak travel times.
Shuttle Services & Car Services

Many offer flat rates and will track your flight in case of delays. This is a particularly smart choice for families with a lot of luggage. You can also opt for cruise line transfers, which are a convenient way to include all of your travel expenses on one payment.
Staying Overnight
We always recommend arriving at least the day before your cruise. Doing so ensures you don't risk missing embarkation for your long-awaited vacation, and also gives you time to explore the world in a bit more depth. You have many options for accommodations in Orlando and Port Canaveral.

Things to do near Port Canaveral
One of the best parts about sailing from Port Canaveral is the abundance of incredible activities and attractions nearby. Whether you have a few hours before embarkation or a full day to explore after disembarkation, the Space Coast delivers.

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex
This is the crown jewel of the Space Coast, and honestly, it's a must-do whether you're a space enthusiast or not. The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is just a short drive from the port and offers a full day of awe-inspiring exhibits, including the Space Shuttle Atlantis display, rocket gardens, and the chance to learn about humanity's greatest journeys into space. If you're lucky enough to time your visit with a rocket launch, it's an experience you will never forget — and Port Canaveral is one of the best viewing spots in the country for launches from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and Launch Complex 39.
Day Trips to Orlando's Theme Parks
If you've built a few extra days into your cruise vacation — and we highly recommend you do — Orlando is just an hour away. Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, and LEGOLAND Florida are all within easy reach. Many families make this the centerpiece of a longer Florida vacation, bookending the cruise with theme park days. It's a combination that really works, and Port Canaveral sits at the perfect geographic midpoint to make it all happen.

Danny's Insider Tips
Foodie Experience: Space Coast Seafood
"The Space Coast is serious seafood country, and Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral deliver. I love the waterfront seafood spots along the port and along A1A — fresh Florida shrimp, grouper, and stone crab are all outstanding here. If you’re arriving a day early and want a genuinely great dinner before the cruise, head to the waterfront and find a table with a view of the port. You’ll be watching the ships while eating some of the freshest Gulf and Atlantic seafood on the East Coast."

Kennedy Space Center
"Kennedy Space Center is one of the most remarkable places in America — full stop. As someone who loves history, I never tire of it. Standing next to a Saturn V rocket, watching launch footage from the Apollo era, understanding what it took for human beings to leave this planet for the first time — it’s genuinely moving. The Visitor Complex has gotten better and better over the years, and if you can time your visit around a rocket launch it’s one of those experiences that stays with you for life. Allow a full day; you’ll need it."

Danny’s Hotel Pick: Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport
"If I’m flying into MCO the night before a cruise, this is where I stay — every time. The Hyatt is built directly into the airport terminal, which means no shuttle, no car, no logistics. You land, take the elevator, check in, and you’re done. The rooms are comfortable, the service is solid, and in the morning you simply head downstairs to your ground transportation to the port. For a pre-cruise night where you just want convenience and rest, it doesn’t get simpler than this."

Danny’s Pick: Everglades Airboat Tour
"If you have an extra day and want something completely different from the theme parks and space history, an Everglades airboat tour is my pick. This is one of the most unique ecosystems on Earth — a “river of grass” teeming with alligators, roseate spoonbills, and wildlife you simply won’t find anywhere else. Tours are accessible from the Orlando and Cape Canaveral area and make for a genuinely unforgettable half-day. It’s the kind of experience that surprises people — they book it thinking it’s a nice add-on and come back saying it was the highlight of the trip."

What to expect when embarking at
Port Canaveral
Port Canaveral is a well-run, modern cruise port that generally makes embarkation a smooth experience — especially if you arrive at your assigned check-in time. Cruise lines operate at multiple terminals, so be sure to know which terminal you're heading to before you arrive. Terminal numbers are marked on signage throughout the port.
Arrive with your travel documents ready: passport, cruise booking confirmation, and any health documentation your cruise line requires. Porters are available to take your checked luggage right at the curb, so you won't need to haul bags all the way to check-in. Give your porters a couple of dollars per bag as a tip — it's appreciated and customary.
If you're sailing with Disney, the terminal experience is especially noteworthy. The dedicated Disney terminal features cast members in character, fun theming throughout the check-in area, and plenty of photo opportunities even before you board. It sets the tone beautifully for what's to come.
ACCESSIBILITY
Accessible handicap parking is available at each terminal garage. For wheelchair or mobility assistance, please confirm with your cruise line or Harr Travel advisor

Disembarking at Port Canaveral
Disembarkation at Port Canaveral follows the same general rhythm as most major cruise ports. You'll be assigned a disembarkation number or color, and you'll be called off the ship in waves. Self-assist disembarkation — where you carry all your own bags off — typically gets you off the ship earliest and is a great option if you have an early flight out of MCO.
If you have arranged for transportation, confirm with the transportation provider your pickup location. On-demand shuttles, taxis and Uber are also available in port.
