Port Guides
Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale is one of the most active cruise ports in the United States, and it's a particular favorite among premium and luxury cruise travelers. Sitting just 2 miles from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, the logistics here are almost unbeatable — you can land, grab your luggage, and be at the terminal in under 15 minutes. That kind of convenience is hard to find.
Fort Lauderdale itself is a wonderfully underrated city. Nicknamed the "Venice of America" for its 165+ miles of inland waterways, it's a place of beautiful beaches, a thriving restaurant scene, world-class yachting culture, and a laid-back energy that feels a world away from the intensity of Miami just 30 miles south.

Getting to Port Everglades
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is the closest major airport to any cruise port in Florida, sitting just 2 miles from Port Everglades. A taxi or ride-share from FLL to the terminal runs about 10–15 minutes and is extremely affordable. Many cruisers also choose to fly into Miami International (MIA), which adds about 45 minutes to the drive but opens up significantly more flight options.

If driving to the port, parking is available in covered garages and open-air lots within the terminal complex. For those flying in the day before, Fort Lauderdale Beach offers fantastic hotel options just minutes from the terminal — and far more reasonable rates than comparable Miami properties.

Cruise lines operate from multiple terminals at Port Everglades. Check your cruise documents ahead of your travel, or one of digital signs as you enter the port facility.
Shuttle Services & Car Services
Depending where you are staying before heading to embarkation, there are shuttles and car share (Uber, Lyft) and taxis available. Hotels close to the cruise port often offer shuttle services for a small fee, double check with your hotel.
Staying Overnight
We always recommend arriving at least the day before your cruise. Doing so ensures you don't risk missing embarkation for your long-awaited vacation, and also gives you time to explore the world in a bit more depth. You have many options for accommodations in Fort Lauderdale.

Things to do near Port Everglades
A little pre-cruise sun and relaxation is a great way to get into the vacation spirit, and Fort Lauderdale offers great opportunities.

Fort Lauderdale Beach & Los Olas Boulevard
Fort Lauderdale Beach is wide, clean, and far less crowded than South Beach. The oceanfront promenade is perfect for a morning walk or jog, and the beachside restaurants and bars create a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere. Just a short distance west, Las Olas Boulevard is the heart of Fort Lauderdale's dining and nightlife scene — a tree-lined street packed with excellent restaurants, boutique shops, and outdoor café culture.

The Riverwalk & Water Taxi
One of the best ways to experience Fort Lauderdale is via the Water Taxi — a fleet of boats that shuttles passengers along the New River and Intracoastal Waterway, connecting restaurants, hotels, and attractions all day long. It's fun, affordable, and gives you a totally unique perspective on why this city earned its "Venice of America" nickname. The Fort Lauderdale Riverwalk runs alongside the New River and is a beautiful spot for a stroll.

NSB Bonnet House Museum & Gardens
Tucked between high-rises on Fort Lauderdale Beach, the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens is a hidden gem — a historic estate home surrounded by lush subtropical gardens, wildlife, and art. It's a wonderful half-day excursion for those who want something beyond the beach and bars.

Danny's Insider Tips
Foodie Experience: Las Olas Boulevard
"Fort Lauderdale has a genuinely great dining scene, and Las Olas Boulevard is the heart of it. Whether you’re in the mood for fresh Florida seafood, a great steakhouse, or a buzzy rooftop cocktail, Las Olas delivers. This is the street I always point clients to when they arrive a day early and want a proper dinner before the cruise. Walk it, browse the galleries, and enjoy the energy of a city that has quietly become one of the best restaurant towns in South Florida."

History & Nature: The Everglades
"The Everglades are one of the most unique and irreplaceable ecosystems on Earth, and they’re less than an hour from the port. An airboat tour through the sawgrass marshes is an experience unlike anything else — alligators sunning on the banks, roseate spoonbills taking flight, and the sheer vastness of this “river of grass” stretching to the horizon. If you have a half-day before embarkation, this is how to spend it."

Danny’s Pick: The Jungle Queen Riverboat
"The Jungle Queen has been cruising the New River and Intracoastal Waterway since 1935, and it remains one of my favorite recommendations for clients who want something genuinely fun the night before their cruise. The dinner cruise takes you past Fort Lauderdale’s famous “Yachting Capital of the World” waterways — mega-yachts, waterfront mansions, and some of the most stunning real estate in Florida — all while you enjoy a classic dinner and live entertainment. It’s a perfect pre-cruise evening."

Danny’s Pick: Fort Lauderdale Beach Day
"Fort Lauderdale Beach is wide, clean, and far less hectic than South Beach — and that’s exactly what I love about it. If you’re arriving the day before your cruise and want to shake off travel fatigue, there is no better cure than a few hours with your feet in the sand and the Atlantic in front of you. The beach here is genuinely beautiful, the hotels are steps away, and you’ll board your ship the next morning feeling like the vacation already started. Which, of course, it did."

ACCESSIBILITY
Accessible handicap parking is available on a first-come basis at each parking lot. If you wish mobility or wheelchair assistance in the terminal, please notify your Harr Travel advisor or the cruise line.
JUMP TO
What to expect when embarking at
Port Everglades
Check departure terminals in your cruise documents before heading to the port, or look out for the digital signage as you enter Port Everglades. Arrive with your travel documents ready: passport, cruise booking confirmation or barcode, and any health or other documentation your cruise line requires. Porters are available to take your checked luggage right at the curb, so you won't need to haul bags all the way to check-in. Give your porters a couple of dollars per bag as a tip — it's appreciated and a customary gesture.

You will go through port security after dropping off your bags, then check in with the cruise line in the terminal building. From there, you board and start your adventure!
Disembarking at Port Everglades
Disembarkation in Fort Lauderdale follows the same general rhythm as most major cruise ports. You'll be assigned a disembarkation number or color, and you'll be called off the ship in waves. Self-assist disembarkation — where you carry all your own bags off — typically gets you off the ship earliest and is a great option if you have an early flight out of Fort Lauderdale or Miami.
If you have arranged for transportation, confirm with the transportation provider your pickup location and time. On-demand shuttles, taxis and Uber are also available in port.
