Port Guides
New York, New York

Sailing from New York City is one of the greatest experiences in cruising. There's nothing quite like watching the Manhattan skyline recede as your ship sails past the Statue of Liberty and under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge — a send-off that no other homeport in the world can match. The Manhattan Cruise Terminal at Piers 88, 90, and 92 sits right in Midtown, within walking distance of Times Square, Central Park, and some of the greatest restaurants on Earth. The Cape Liberty cruise port is also easily reached for those sailing on Royal Caribbean or Celebrity.

Whether you're a northeast local using the ports closest to home or a visitor from across the country who's building a few NYC days into your cruise vacation, sailing from New York is an extraordinary combination of city energy and open-ocean escape.

Getting to New York City

Getting to either New York departure port usually means flying into one of the city’s airports, arriving by train or driving. Both ports are served by all of New York and Newark’s airports giving you ample flexibility when planning air travel in.

From the airports to the terminal, allow 45–90 minutes depending on traffic — NYC traffic is notoriously unpredictable. We strongly recommend arriving in New York at least a day before your sailing. This gives you time to absorb the city, enjoy a great dinner, and arrive at the terminal relaxed and ready. The terminal itself is easily accessible by taxi or ride-share from anywhere in Manhattan.

If you are driving, parking at either port is available but can be limited.

Staying Overnight

We always recommend arriving at least the day before your cruise, and honestly one day in New York is simply not enough! There is so much to see and do in the city before or after your cruise. You have so many options.

Things to do in New York City

A guide to New York could be an entire adventure. We’ve given a few of our guests’ favorite experiences below.

The Classic NYC Experience

Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the High Line, the Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, Chelsea Market — New York's list of iconic experiences is virtually endless. If you only have one day, choose one neighborhood and go deep rather than trying to see everything. Hell's Kitchen and the West Village are both walkable from the cruise terminal and offer exceptional dining and character.

State of Liberty & Ellis Island

If you haven't visited Lady Liberty, the day before your cruise is a perfect time to do it. Take the ferry from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan — the round trip takes about 3–4 hours and includes Ellis Island. It's a moving, historic experience and gives you a wonderful appreciation for the send-off you'll get when your ship sails past the very next morning.

The New York Food Scene

New York is arguably the greatest food city in the world, and even a single day offers remarkable options. From the legendary delis of the Midtown area, to the upscale restaurants of the West Village and Tribeca, to the incredible diversity of Queens cuisine — eating in New York is an adventure in itself. Or, simply grab a slice – every New Yorker has their favorite!

Danny's Insider Tips

Foodie Experience: NYC Food Walking & Tasting Tour

"I believe New York City is the greatest food city on Earth — and I mean that without reservation. The sheer depth and diversity of what you can eat here, from the best pizza and bagels and pastrami to Michelin-starred tasting menus representing dozens of cuisines, is simply unmatched anywhere in the world. The best way to experience this is on a guided foodie walking and tasting tour. Whether you’re exploring the West Village, Chelsea Market, the Lower East Side, or Chinatown, a good food tour puts the stories and the flavors together in a way that transforms a neighborhood into something you’ll never forget. It’s the perfect first morning in the city."

History & Culture: 1 World Trade Center, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum

"A visit to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum is one of the most moving experiences New York has to offer. The reflecting pools — built in the footprints of the Twin Towers, with the names of nearly 3,000 victims carved around their edges — are profoundly powerful. The museum below tells the story of that day with extraordinary care and honesty. Allow at least two to three hours. One World Trade Center, now the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, rises directly above it — a remarkable symbol of resilience. The observation deck at the top offers 360-degree views of the city that are among the finest anywhere. It’s a visit that stays with you."

Danny’s Pick: Helicopter Ride Over Manhattan

"If there is one experience that puts the sheer scale and beauty of New York City into perspective, it’s a helicopter ride over the Big Apple. Flying along the Hudson River with the Manhattan skyline rising to your right, banking over Central Park, seeing the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty from above — it’s a perspective on this extraordinary city that you simply can’t get any other way. It’s also one of the best ways to understand why New York is New York. Book in advance, as tours fill quickly. It’s an investment, but it’s worth every penny."

Danny’s Pick: A Broadway Show

"Broadway is one of the defining cultural experiences of New York City and I recommend it to every single client. My personal favorites are Hamilton — a genuinely revolutionary piece of American musical theater that manages to make the Founding Fathers feel urgent and alive — and Dear Evan Hansen, which is deeply moving and extraordinarily well-crafted. Book tickets well in advance for the best seats, especially for Hamilton. If you’re flexible on the show, TKTS in Times Square offers same-day discounted tickets for many productions. Whatever you see, the energy and craft of a Broadway performance is something you’ll carry home with you."

Danny’s Pick: Museum of Natural History & MoMA

"The American Museum of Natural History on the Upper West Side is one of my favorite museums anywhere in the world. The Hall of Ocean Life, the dinosaur halls, the Rose Center for Earth and Space — it rewards multiple visits and appeals equally to children and adults. Allow a full day. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in Midtown is equally essential: Van Gogh’s Starry Night, Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, Warhol, Pollock, Matisse — the permanent collection is staggering in its depth and quality. Both museums are available through Project Expedition for guided tours that add enormous context to what you’re seeing."

ACCESSIBILITY

Accessible handicap parking is available but limited in both ports. They are available on a first-come basis. If you wish mobility or wheelchair assistance in the terminal, please notify your Harr Travel advisor or the cruise line.

Things to do

What to expect when embarking at
New York City

Arrive with your travel documents ready: passport, cruise booking confirmation or barcode, and any health or other documentation your cruise line requires. Porters are available to take your checked luggage right at the curb, so you won't need to haul bags all the way to check-in. Give your porters a couple of dollars per bag as a tip — it's appreciated and a customary gesture.

You will go through port security after dropping off your bags, then check in with the cruise line in the terminal building. From there, you board and start your adventure!

Embarkation

Disembarking at New York City

Disembarkation in PortMiami follows the same general rhythm as most major cruise ports. You'll be assigned a disembarkation number or color, and you'll be called off the ship in waves. Self-assist disembarkation — where you carry all your own bags off — typically gets you off the ship earliest and is a great option if you have an early flight out of Miami or Fort Lauderdale.

If you have arranged for transportation, confirm with the transportation provider your pickup location and time, and cruise line terminal. On-demand shuttles, taxis and Uber are also available in port.
