Port Guides
Athens, Greece (Piraeus)

Piraeus is the port of Athens, and Athens is the cradle of Western civilization. Those two facts combine to make an embarkation from this city one of the most resonant, historically charged, and breathtakingly beautiful experiences available to any traveler. The Acropolis visible from across the city. The blue-white Cycladic architecture of the Greek islands just days away. The Mediterranean light that has inspired artists and philosophers for millennia. Sailing from Athens is not just a cruise departure — it is a beginning in the deepest sense of the word.

The Port of Piraeus is one of the largest passenger ports in the world and is extremely well-connected to central Athens via metro. Most international cruisers spend 2–4 nights in Athens before or after sailing, and we strongly encourage this — the city offers a lifetime of discovery, and even a few days barely scratches the surface of what's here.

Getting to Athens

Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" (ATH) is about 20 miles east of Athens and about 27 miles from the Port of Piraeus. The Athens Metro Line 3 (Blue Line) connects the airport directly to central Athens, and from central Athens, Metro Line 1 (Green Line) runs directly to Piraeus station, which is adjacent to the cruise terminal. The full journey from airport to port via metro takes approximately 60–75 minutes and is very affordable — a remarkable convenience for an international cruise gateway.

Taxis and ride-shares also connect the airport and central Athens to Piraeus efficiently. Many cruise guests choose to stay in Athens city center, particularly in the Plaka, Monastiraki, or Koukaki neighborhoods. This is an excellent approach that maximizes time in the city.

Staying Overnight

We always recommend arriving at least the day before your cruise. Doing so ensures you don't risk missing embarkation for your long-awaited vacation, and also gives you time to explore the world in a bit more depth. You have many options for accommodations in Athens.

Things to do in Athens

Two to three days gives you ample time to explore Athens in-depth. Here are some of our guest favorites. We can help you craft bespoke experiences that include these highlights and any others that are on your personal wish list.

The Acropolis & Acropolis Museum

The Acropolis of Athens is among the most extraordinary sites in the human world. The Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Propylaea, and the Temple of Athena Nike sit atop the sacred rock, offering panoramic views over the sprawling city and a direct physical connection to the 5th century BC. The new Acropolis Museum at the foot of the hill is an architectural and curatorial triumph — its collection of sculptures and artifacts, presented in a modern glass building that frames the Acropolis itself through its windows, is one of the finest museum experiences in Europe. There is no greater example of a living museum.

Plaka & Monastiraki

The Plaka neighborhood at the foot of the Acropolis is Athens' oldest residential area, a maze of neoclassical houses, Byzantine churches, and winding pedestrian streets that feel entirely removed from the modern city pressing in on all sides. Monastiraki, adjacent to Plaka, hosts a lively flea market on Sunday mornings and some of the best street food in the city. Together, these two neighborhoods offer the most atmospheric strolling in Athens.

Cape Sounion & the Temple of Poseidon

If you have a full day to spare before your sailing, the drive south along the Attic coast to Cape Sounion is unforgettable. The Temple of Poseidon, perched on a cliff above the Aegean Sea, is one of the most dramatically situated ancient sites in Greece. Lord Byron carved his name into the marble here in 1810, and the sunset views across the sea are staggering. Allow 3–4 hours for the round trip from Athens.

Danny's Insider Tips

Foodie Experience: Plaka Food Tour

"The Plaka is the oldest neighborhood in Athens — a labyrinth of narrow streets winding beneath the Acropolis, lined with tavernas, bakeries, and market stalls that have fed this city for generations. A guided food tour through the Plaka is one of my absolute favorite ways to arrive in Athens. You’ll taste spanakopita fresh from a neighborhood bakery, graze on olives and honey, sample loukoumades, and learn the stories behind a cuisine that is far older and more nuanced than most visitors expect. It’s the perfect first morning in the city before you head uphill to the monuments."

History & Culture: The Agora, the Acropolis & the National Archaeological Museum

"For a history lover, Athens is almost overwhelming in the best possible way. I always start at the Ancient Agora — the beating heart of ancient Athenian democracy, where Socrates walked and taught and was ultimately condemned. Standing in that space, knowing what happened there, is genuinely moving. The Stoa of Attalos reconstruction gives you a vivid sense of what the marketplace looked like at its height. From there, walk uphill to the Acropolis — go early in the morning or in the late afternoon to avoid the midday heat, and the crowds thin considerably. The views from the Propylaea are staggering. Set aside time for the National Archaeological Museum as well: it is one of the great museums in the world, housing treasures from across the ancient Greek world including the Antikythera Mechanism, golden masks of Mycenae, and the sculpture collection. Allow a full day."

Danny’s Pick: The Ancient Agora — Pay Tribute to Socrates

"As a history teacher at heart, the Ancient Agora is the place in Athens that moves me most. This is where Athenian democracy was born, where philosophy happened in real time, and where Socrates spent his life asking questions that still echo 2,400 years later. The site is less crowded than the Acropolis above it and gives you a much more intimate connection with ancient life. The Temple of Hephaestus is one of the best-preserved Greek temples in existence. Don’t rush through it. Sit for a moment and let the weight of what happened here land."

Danny’s Pick: The Parthenon — Timing Is Everything

"Everyone visits the Parthenon, and they should — it is one of the most extraordinary things human beings have ever built. But how you visit matters enormously. Go first thing when the gates open, or arrive in the late afternoon when the light turns golden and the worst of the day’s heat has passed. Midday in summer is brutal and the crowds are at their peak. The walk up through the Propylaea with the Parthenon revealing itself above you is a moment I’ve experienced many times and it never loses its power. Pair it with the Acropolis Museum below — world-class, beautifully designed, and essential context for everything you’re seeing on the hill."

What to expect when embarking at
Athens

Arrive with your travel documents ready: passport, cruise booking confirmation or barcode, and any health or other documentation your cruise line requires. Porters are available to take your checked luggage right at the curb, so you won't need to haul bags all the way to check-in. Give your porters a couple of dollars per bag as a tip — it's appreciated and a customary gesture.

You will go through port security after dropping off your bags, then check in with the cruise line in the terminal building. From there, you board and start your adventure!

Disembarking at Athens

Embarkation
Disembarking

Disembarkation in Athens follows the same general rhythm as most major cruise ports. You'll be assigned a disembarkation number or color, and you'll be called off the ship in waves. Self-assist disembarkation — where you carry all your own bags off — typically gets you off the ship earliest and is a great option if you have an early flight out of one of the region’s airports.

If you have arranged for transportation, confirm with the transportation provider your pickup location and time. On-demand shuttles, taxis and Uber are also available in port.
